A result of the 20th century rather than an invention, the Motel is pure American id. Stripped of any traditional need for familial or tribal hospitality the Motel is a paean to the transient — an interstitial for a transitory populace moving through a wholly commodified landscape. Now, the curtains of the low-lined lodges of the convoy are peeled aside to reveal the stripped lives with-in; a writhing gyre of contemplation and a wondering of what happened and imbued, despite the odds, with a hidden optimism that hope might arrive on the ever active highway, in the face of the motel numbered doors.
